The X-prize Foundation showcases and rewards cutting-edge innovations in fields that have the potential to benefit humanity. The Automotive X-prize is for fuel efficiency. Sponsored by the Progressive insurance company and partially funded by the Department of Energy, it was given in three different vehicle classes. Regardless of the class, the cars had to be safe, "commercially viable" -- meaning only that they had to perform more-or-less like a regular cars -- and they had to get at least 100 miles per gallon or the equivalent.

Li-ion Motors Corp.'s Wave II

Vehicles in this category seated two people side-by-side, as the name implies. They also had to go at least 100 miles before needing to refuel or recharge.

The winner, in this case, drew on the advantage of electric motors: their much greater efficiency compared to internal combustion engines. Electric motors turn nearly all the energy fed into them into motion. Gasoline engines turn only about 30% of gasoline's energy into motion while most ends up wasted as heat.

This car got 187 MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent. In other words, it can go 187 miles on same amount of energy as that contained in one gallon of gasoline.

This Wave II also minimized one big disadvantage of electric drive: weight. Gasoline contains much more energy per cubic foot than batteries, so electric car batteries end up being big and heavy compared to a tank of gasoline. In this case, the car itself, built largely from aluminum, is so light that it all adds up to only 2,176 pounds total. That's less than a tiny Smart car.

Cars in the "tandem class" were two-seaters with the occupants sitting one behind the other. In this case, you might question the use of the word "car" since this vehicle looks an awful lot like a motorcycle. It does have four wheels, though. It's just that two of them fold up and out of the way while driving, dropping down at low speeds to provide stability. It thus qualifies as a car under the X-prize rules.

Its bike-style body saves a lot of weight, which confers advantages in both efficiency and performance. In tests, this car got to sixty miles per hour in a relatively blistering 6.6 seconds.

Still, the Wave II takes almost 15 seconds to reach 60 miles an hour, good enough to win here but downright pokey by most standards.

Toyota--the automaker perhaps best known for producing hybrid vehicles--now claims that it will be able to produce a $50,000 hydrogen sedan by 2015, according to Green Car Reports.

That's not an impressive price considering that there are multiple sub-$40,000 EVs being released later this year (including the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt), but consider this: Toyota claims that the cost to build hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has plunged 90% in under 10 years. And Toyota is far from the only automaker to invest in fuel cell technology. GM, Honda, and Daimler all have research programs of their own.

But while startups like SunHydro are convinced that hydrogen technology will end up being practical, it seems like most automakers are only investing in fuel cell vehicles as a backup plan. After all, it's unlikely that we'll have three fueling infrastructures (gasoline, electric, and hydrogen), and automakers appear to be rushing out EVs as fast as possible. It's always wise to have a backup plan, though, right?

Cheap Catalyst for Splitting Water

Hydrogen would command a key role in future renewable energy technologies, experts agree, if a relatively cheap, efficient and carbon-neutral means of producing it can be developed. An important step towards this elusive goal has been taken by a team of researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California, Berkeley. The team has discovered an inexpensive metal catalyst that can effectively generate hydrogen gas from water.

Hydrogen gas, whether combusted or used in fuel cells to generate electricity, emits only water vapor as an exhaust product, which is why this nation would already be rolling towards a hydrogen economy if only there were hydrogen wells to tap. However, hydrogen gas does not occur naturally and has to be produced. Most of the hydrogen gas in the United States today comes from natural gas, a fossil fuel. While inexpensive, this technique adds huge volumes of carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Hydrogen can also be produced through the electrolysis of water -- using electricity to split molecules of water into molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. This is an environmentally clean and sustainable method of production -- especially if the electricity is generated via a renewable technology such as solar or wind -- but requires a water-splitting catalyst.

It’s the nose, front wheel spats and tricycle layout that give that impression as the 2e drives toward you, despite the lack of wings and propellers. From the back, it’s a pure aerodynamic exercise.

Aptera’s big story is in the electric drivetrain that combines the equipment of such firms as General Electric and Borg Warner with lithium-ion nano-phosphate batteries from 123 Systems. In the 1800-lb. composite-bodied 2e, the 110-horsepower, 232 lb.-ft. of torque electric drive system has a claimed range of 100 miles. Recharging time from full discharge is set at 6 to 11 hours. The front-drive machine is said to reach 60 mph in 9.0 seconds.

All ev and hybrid delivery trucks will soon be branded with the FedEx EarthSmart logo to signify the company’s efforts to reduce fleet environmental impacts. FedEx has set a goal of improving the fuel economy of its road fleet by 20 percent by 2020, in addition to also cutting its air-related greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020. By 2020, FedEx wants biofuels to account for 30 percent of its jet fuel use.

In addition to natural gas and hybrid electric trucks... Fed Ex is trying true battery power. I think its a little early but one day....

FedEx announced the addition of a test run of four electric delivery vans to their US fleet. They’ve commissioned the vehicles to be built from the ground up and they’re slating them to start their shifts this coming June. Two of the vehicles were unveiled this week. Designed by the UK company Modec, distributed in the US by Navistar and hailed by the New York Times as “the cutest electric vehicles” they’ve seen, the vans can run up to 100 miles on an overnight charge.

The Lumeneo SMERA is an ultra-small Battery electric vehicle (BEV). It is a two-seater which tilts up to 25° in curves. With a length of 2m50 and width of 86 cm, it is something between an electric car and a scooter and includes lithium ion battery pack. It is regulated in Europe as a car (classification M1). Its speed is announced to be of 130 km/h (80 mph) with a range of 150 km (90 miles).[1] It made its debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

French railroad company SNCF has invested 1.5 million euros in Lumeneo. The French railway reportedly injected capital into Green Cove Engineering, a provider of carpooling services. [2]

Lumeneo is currently available only in Paris France, at a starting price of 24,500 euros (about $33,000 US) after deduction of the 5,000 euros environmental state subsidy.[3] The company's website states that it will be establishing dealers across Europe in 2010.[2]

Closed-loop ethanol system

At the Genesis plant the patented closed-loop ethanol system produces energy by combining manure, collected from an adjacent 28,000-head cattle feedlot, with thin stillage, a cellulosic byproduct of ethanol refining. The hot liquid mixture is decomposed inside an anaerobic digester, where bacteria extract methane-rich biogas that is used to fire the plant's ethanol boilers. Traditional ethanol refineries are fueled by coal or natural gas.The leftover grain is fed wet to the cattle at the nearby feedlot, whose manure in turn powers the plant and creates high-quality fertilizer as a byproduct. Traditional ethanol plants have to invest in expensive, energy-intensive equipment to dry this leftover grain to prevent spoilage, and then transport it to far-off farms to use as feed. The on-site cows are treated to fresh wet cake from the nearby plant, thus avoiding both the cost and fossil fuel pollution of drying and transporting the grain.

Greenhouse gases are reduced by capturing the methane gas, which is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide in causing global warming, that the decomposing manure would release to the atmosphere if it were not used in the process. By recycling livestock manure into biogas energy, the system eliminates a major component of the No. 1 source of water pollution in the United States: agricultural runoff.

The 1,496cc gasoline engine has a maximum output of 75 hp (56kW) @ 5,000 rpm and a maximum torque: 110N-m (11.2kg-m) @ 4,000rpm. Maximum output using both the engine and the battery is 134 hp (100 kW). Charging time for the battery is 1-1.5hrs @ 200V and 3-4hrs @ 100V.

General Motors is working on two new plug-in hybrid vehicles, but it has not set a specific timeline. A plug-in hybrid could have its batteries charged by plugging into an electrical outlet as well as by using power generated from an on-board engine. The first GM vehicle would be a plug-in version of the new Saturn Vue Hybrid. The other would be something like the Chevrolet Volt concept car, where the wheels are driven by electricity alone, and an on-board engine is used only for back-up generator power.

The SHEC technology solves numerous problems such as the destruction of harmful green house gasses as well as the production of clean, green, high purity, renewable hydrogen. It also displaces the use of our diminishing resources of natural gas for hydrogen production.

The unit produces hydrogen with solar energy as the primary energy input. A solar concentrator, pictured, similar to that used in thermal solar dish electrical generators is used. The Stirling engine in the electrical generators is replaced by a reaction chamber that receives the solar energy through an iris that can be controlled to regulate the amount of heat being fed to the reactor. SHEC has developed a solar concentrator that is simple to make using relatively common materials. They developed a process to get the curvatures required to a high degree of accuracy with a manufacturing process that is very inexpensive.

FutureGen, the Integrated Sequestration and Hydrogen Research Initiative, is a $1 billion industry/government partner- ship to design, build and operate a coal gasification-based, nearly emission-free, coal-fired electricity and hydrogen production plant. The 275-megawatt prototype plant will serve as a large scale engineering laboratory for testing new clean power, carbon capture, and coal-to-hydrogen technologies. It will be the cleanest fossil fuel-fired power plant in the world. Virtually every aspect of the prototype plant will employ cutting-edge technology. With respect to sequestration technologies, captured CO2 will be separated from the hydrogen perhaps by novel membranes currently under development. It would then be permanently sequestered in a geologic formation. Candidate reservoir(s) could include depleted oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams, deep saline aquifers, and basalt formations - all common in the United States. FutureGen efforts will benefit from the other ongoing activities in our R&D portfolio.

The “alé” features a unique 3-wheeled configuration: 2 in the front, and one in the rear. The front wheels drive and steer the vehicle. This design enables the car to perform at a superb level, particularly in cornering, with the car easily pulling 1.7 g’s in corners during track testing on street tires. The three-wheeled automotive platform also aid in improving fuel efficiency and aerodynamics.

Vapor system:

The car’s key innovation's are the fuel vapor system and it's light weight aerodynamic body. This fuel vapor technology (which is in the patent pending process) allows the engine to run on “fuel vapors” rather than liquid fuel. The majority of gas engines today run 14.7:1 – (14.7 parts air to 1 part gasoline). This proprietary fuel vapor system allows the “alé” to run on a ratio of over 20:1 without compromising performance. According to the textbooks, this ratio is impossible, as a standard engine would not start or run on a air/fuel ratio this low. With a 10 gallon gas tank found on most vehicles, the “alé” can travel from Vancouver BC to San Francisco CA on one tank. Over 15 hours of driving without filling up.

Modern usage of windmills to produce electricity was brought about mostly because of the oil crisis of 1973. As with solar power, the U.S. government gave large tax breaks to investors who funded windmill research and farms. Research departments of several companies took advantage of the tax credits and made huge progress in a short amount of time. Although they faced difficulty with durability early on they now feel that such problems have now been solved. Unfortunately in 1983 some large investors decided to set up large windmill farms using cheap windmills that ran at very disappointing rates. Today the technology is being revisited with hopefully better results than in the past.

Two examples of solar balloons being used to generate power are the Magenn Solar Blimp and Sky Panels. The Magenn, called the 'M.A.R.S' - a fantastic acronym for the Magenn Power Air Rotor System - which promises lower costs, better performance, and enhanced environmental benefit. The turbine is a lighter than air blimp, which rotates around a horizontal axis. A unique design orients the blimp into the wind. One of the interesting facets of this technology, is that as it is anchored to the ground by a 1000 foot cable, the MARS could be anywhere up to 707 ft from its base. And Sky Panels which basic idea is a string of large helium balloons coated with solar panels and tethered together. The cord that connects them to each other and to the ground has two additional functions, delivering helium to the balloon, and pulling electricity back down to earth.

GM flex fuels of Europe. Through its Opel Corsa, GM intends to diversify it's Flex Fuel line-up globally. Additionally, GM Europe has outlined an environmental strategy that focuses in the short-term on reducing CO₂ emissions through engine downsizing, systems optimization (through the use of technologies such as start/stop) and alternative fuels (including CNG and E85); and in the long-term on introducing new propulsion technologies.

In the meantime it is clear that Diesel Hybrids promise enormous fuel savings and the fuel infrastructure can handle the scalable increase to handle more vehicles. It is a good start and it makes sense today, unlike electric or hydrogen cars. GMEs especially pro-environmental automobiles combine economy and driving enjoyment with low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions in each vehicle class. The premiere model is a Corsa 1.3 CDTI emitting only 119 g/km of CO2, which will be launched in 2008. The Swedish premium brand Saab is also expanding its range of BioPower engines across its entire model portfolio this year. Cadillac will offer a similar E85 variant as of fall 2007, and in 2010, E85 vehicles are expected to be available for Opel/Vauxhall and Chevrolet.
