gm ecoflex of europe




GM flex fuels of Europe. Through its Opel Corsa, GM intends to diversify it's Flex Fuel line-up globally. Additionally, GM Europe has outlined an environmental strategy that focuses in the short-term on reducing CO2 emissions through engine downsizing, systems optimization (through the use of technologies such as start/stop) and alternative fuels (including CNG and E85); and in the long-term on introducing new propulsion technologies.

In the meantime it is clear that Diesel Hybrids promise enormous fuel savings and the fuel infrastructure can handle the scalable increase to handle more vehicles. It is a good start and it makes sense today, unlike electric or hydrogen cars. GMEs especially pro-environmental automobiles combine economy and driving enjoyment with low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions in each vehicle class. The premiere model is a Corsa 1.3 CDTI emitting only 119 g/km of CO2, which will be launched in 2008. The Swedish premium brand Saab is also expanding its range of BioPower engines across its entire model portfolio this year. Cadillac will offer a similar E85 variant as of fall 2007, and in 2010, E85 vehicles are expected to be available for Opel/Vauxhall and Chevrolet.

SolarFields of tommorrow



The first phase of the SoCal Edison project will be to build a 1-megawatt test site using 40 dishes, which should be complete by spring 2007. Construction on the full, 500-megawatt facility is expected to begin in mid-2008, and should take three to four years. Each dish can produce up to 25 kilowatts, and the site will eventually have 20,000 dishes stretching across 4,500 acres of desert. Stirling Energy is the general contractor.

Portugal Worlds Largest Solar Farm


The three movers and shakers on this project are as follows: GE Energy Financial Services is putting up the dough ($75 million USD) so they get to own it. PowerLight have designed and will operate the facility. And local Portuguese renewable energy company, Catavento, will maintain and manage it. According to the press release this will all happen on a 60-hectare (150-acre) southern-facing hillside that will remain productive farmland. And if all goes to plan (construction starts next month) the solar juice will flow by January 2007, so it can power 8,000 homes, and save more than 30,000 tons a year in greenhouse gas emissions.

Solar panels produce the electricity for a Proton Energy Systems electrolyzer that generates up to 12 kg of hydrogen per day, to be used to fuel two vehicles in the LVVWD fleet. The first is a Polaris Ranger internal combustion utility vehicle that has been converted to hydrogen fuel, and the second, a Taylor-Dunn converted electric truck that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell.

LANdroid Wireless Warfare

Modern warfare is increasingly urban - when you're fighting small groups of anonymous guerrilla insurgents there's no pitched battlefields and American forces are finding that their radio communications are suffering in these Non-Line-Of-Sight environments. The solution? Squadrons of smart communications robots, or LANdroids, each the size of a deck of cards, that can be scattered through an urban environment to create a self-organizing mesh radio network. Each unit constantly repositions itself for maximal signal strength, and if a LANdroid is destroyed, the rest of the units will reposition themselves to restore communications. DARPA is soliciting proposals for intelligent autonomous radio relay nodes that are able to establish mesh networks in urban settings. Ideally, a LANdroid unit would consist of a robotic platform - small, inexpensive, smart, and mobile (as shown in the photoshop artist's conception above). Warfighters would carry lots of them (they should be roughly palm-size) and then drop them as they go. Together, the units would form a self-healing mesh network - multi-path, multi-hop and multiply connected. If a particular unit is taken out by the enemy (or possibly grabbed by some kid as a cool toy!), the network will route around the lost transmitter. The ability to set up small subnetworks that exchange data, monitor enemy data and allow better troop intercommunication is a major breakthrough and innovation.

The in wheel electric motor holds a lot of promise as ecological "Drive-by-Wire" automobiles become a common sight on roads in 15 years.. In wheel motors are proving to be very efficient and durable. As the transportation network shifts towards hybridization and plug-in technology, in wheel motors will become very common. In Wheel motors allow more vehicle interior space to be devoted to batteries, cargo, etc... It is very interesting and can be seen in many future concepts, but is here today. Regenerative braking, and immediate torque are features of this configuration.

Intelligent Multimode Transit System

Toyota has built an entire bus that runs on fuel cells. Called the Intelligent Multimode Transit System (it's a hybrid), these buses of the future are on the road. Fuel Cells are indeed on the long term transportation horizon, but the infrastructure and fuel cell reliability are still in question. Mild Hybrid: 10% Solution


This is a GM "Mild Hybrid" device. It is referred to as the "10% solution", because it is targeted towards curtailing fuel use during starting. The first 0-5 Mph of driving, draws the most torque from the engine. "Mild Hybrid" adds an electric motor enhanced starting system, to get the vehicles rolling. It is projected to add 10% to total mileage. Mild hybrid equipment can be installed on most heavy vehicles. Trucks, Vans, Buses and or Utility Vehicles, especially those that are used in start/stop driving will benefit the most. German companies such as Siemans, Mercedes Benz and Virgin Atlantic are making significant progress on the implementation of environmental vehicle technology. The proof is in the pudding and hybrids work... The best solution is within our grasp. Tomorrow's technology will undoubtedly conquer any remaining hurdles. Prius is the greatest car ever


The Toyota Prius is in my humble opinion, the greatest car ever. It was able to find its way inside as a niche player in a new field. Prius has shown that hybrids are both reliable and fuel efficient. Toyota has recently announced several milestones have been passed for the Prius. 1. Over 1 million sold 2. Entry into the top ten vehicles sold list at 24,000 sold in a single month and 3. the eventual creation of the Prius line.

All the while the basic technology that runs the Prius is being opted into more and more uses. The early adopter period is soon ending.The price and availability of hybrids must become more competitive with pure combustion vehicles. The are many ways in which this can occur. Oil prices sky rocket, government acts or the people speak. The Prius is a funny looking little car, but it has done more to galvanize opinion and demonstrate an alternative to the dark path of oil dependence than any other single icon in the world. When the Prius wins we all win. Therefore, I say "All hail the Prius", the greatest car ever.

The are many ways that environmental vehicle can produce tangible benefits in the reduction of petroleum fuel use. The implementation of hybrid technology in automobiles has proven both popular and reliable. The cost differential of the technology is still not the compelling feature of the technology. Early adopters, as always, are paying a disproportionate share of the
development costs of this technology. The next stage will be the realization that sizable efficiency gains can be found in the increase of internal combustion efficiency by switching to Plug in Hybrid Environmental Vehicle (PHEV) technology. PHEV breaks down into two categories, 1. Parallel and Serial hybrid configurations (SHC). Serial hybrids reverse the EBR. Energy is produced much more efficiently from a Constant Velocity Motor. Automobiles in serial mode are much more like electric vehicles with small rechargers. General Motors, Volt concept car is the first commercial example of the application of this technology. However, as more and more automobile batteries are recharged on the main electrical grid the aggregate of energy demanded should increase. Essentially this is a good thing for society, because the electric utility emissions can be better monitored and reduced than in automobiles. The shifting to serial will have the immediate benefit of reducing the amount of oil the average driver will consume by supplimentation of battery charge for gasoline. The direct electric motor configuration is more efficient than the internal combustion engine, which is in effect an "implied electrical system". The benefits of PHEV will be greatest in station fleets and in large cities and that is where political and commercial efforts need to be focused.

HOPS: Hybrid Overnight Plug-IN Systems



Hybrid Overnight Plug-In Systems (Hops) :

The opportunity exists today for a massive shift in the energy consumption levels in the United States. Hops relies upon the application of existing technology namely the plug-in hybrid configuration. Vehicle systems that rely on fixed overnight refueling points and provide systemic service, such as buses, delivery vehicles and military bases can significantly reduce their aggregate energy consumption by implementing Hops. Today's transportation systems can attain drastically improved levels of both fuel efficiency and environmental compliance. The key shift is to recognize that in the "serial" hybrid layout will bring the highest levels of improvement. Simply stated by reversing the ratio of engine to battery. In a serial configuration the battery pack is the significant feature of the vehicle and the motors merely keeps the batteries fresh. The combination of utilizing highly efficient constant velocity motors and plug-in recharging can significantly reduce fuel consumption and shift a large portion of the demand onto the electrical grid, at night when consumption is lowest and the cost savings the greatest.
